Robert Ivy, FAIA, is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects. He has served in that position since 2011. Robert is also the Executive Vice President of the Institute.
He is a native of Mississippi. Robert began his career as an architect after his college graduation more than four decades ago. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and majored in English at Sewanee: The University of the South. He also achieved his Masters of Architecture at Tulane University. His career was highlighted earlier this year with a lifetime achievement award bestowed upon him by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. A spokesperson for The American Institute of Architects made the announcement in April of 2018. Robert Ivy was named the recipient of the Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious award is presented to Mississippians to recognize their exemplary service in their field of the arts. Robert is the first architect to ever receive this award. He now joins a distinguished list of recipients that includes Eudora Welty, Morgan Freeman, Shelby Foote, and Leontyne Price.
Robert Ivy spent many years of his career at McGraw Hill Publishing. He served the firm in a variety of positions, including that as the Vice President and Editorial Director of its Construction Media division. He additionally served as editor in chief of McGraw Hill’s Architectural Record. Under Robert’s tenure, the publication became the most widely read journal in the industry. He was responsible for several other company publications as well, including Constructor, HQ Magazine, The Magazine of Sustainable Design, Sweets, and SNAP.
He also served for many years as a Principal in the architectural firm of Dean, Dale, Dean & Ivy during the early 1980s until the mid 1990s. Robert received the McGraw Hill Management Excellence Award and the American Business Media’s renowned Crain Award, among others.
