Most people know that a home is more than just the sum of its parts. It has a design, purpose and even a flow to it that all comes to a focal point. This is hard to explain, at times, and it’s better experienced firsthand. When it comes to the thought process behind making this experience come together, there are captains of the industry who recommend transcendence. What this translates to is that leaders in the field, such as Robert Ivy, urge up-and-coming architects to think outside of the box while incorporating other fields into their practice. View Robert Ivy’s profile at Tulane School of Architecture
A good example of this is to realize that the construction of a home may be the best place to start a healthy way of life. This can be done in several different ways from the design of form to materials, and it can include things such as functionality. Robert Ivy even points to history to illustrate some of the aspects of what this means. For example, the Washington DC swamps that are now drained acts as a form of construction for the sake of public health. So is the establishment that many people know as Central Park in New York City. Even though these establishments and institutions do not exactly fall under the realm of healthcare or scientific medicine, their construction is based on the concept of public health and the idea that where people live affects how well they live.
When city buildings are built upon this design of public health as concern, it actually affects the community in a positive way. In other words, buildings such as stadiums, hospitals and others just as important can have more stairs and elevators or access to sunlight and clean water depending on their position and location. It’s all about keeping this basic principle in mind as architects and designers come up with better homes for people to live and do business in. Robert Ivy understands that sometimes the importance of this concept can be blurred as it is an ancient one. It’s something like going to actually look at a famous painting by Picasso or reading a really good book by Carol but instead just reading about it in a magazine or watching a movie inspired by the book.
The point remains that this concept is something that has to be reintroduced every now and again to a new generation. These are the kinds of thoughts Robert Ivy has, as the CEO of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). And, it is a good thing that he does have these thoughts, as the AIA provides education, community development, government advocacy and other services, located out if Washington, DC. It is quite the hub for professional architects throughout the United States.
The American Institute of Architects, also known as the AIA, is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Currently led in part by CEO Robert Ivy, the organization was originally founded in the mid-19th century to elevate the standing of the profession. Today, the AIA has headquarters in Washington, D.C., and one of its main goals is to grant accreditation to architects throughout the country. This accreditation is granted to members of the organization who adhere to a code of ethics and professional conduct.
Throughout its existence, the AIA has been devoted to servicing American society and improving the quality of American life. With a cohesive board of directors and over 200 employees, the AIA effectively utilizes a unified organizational structure and collective action. Public service work that is regularly carried out by the AIA includes working with federal, state, and local policymakers and launching community-based programs aiming to enhance public spaces. Perhaps most significantly, the AIA works to protect national infrastructure and develop solidly-built, impressively-designed, affordable housing for the nation’s residents.
Current CEO Robert Ivy has been CEO of the AIA since 2011. In his past seven years as CEO, Ivy has demonstrated his devotion to keeping the architecture profession as effective as possible in supporting a fast-changing global world. Most notably, Ivy has maintained a dedication to issues of climate change, sustainability, and public health. Ivy’s leadership of the AIA has assured that the most influential designers and architects throughout the country are deeply aware of and focused on the intersections of design and public health.
In 2012, Ivy spearheaded a ten-year plan to develop design solutions for cities confronting challenges related to public health, sustainability, and resiliency. According to a 2012 overview of the project featured in Metropolis, the effort is titled Decade of Design and consists university research and “community planning collaborations.” A unique part of the project is an initiative called Show Us Your APPtitude Hackathon. The initiative aims to promote and utilize creative apps and technologies as springboards. The Decade of Design is just one of the ways that Robert Ivy has ushered in an era of digital-first technology infrastructure that is aptly suited to today’s tech-oriented mindset.

Items such as solar panels help to produce electricity and Robert Ivy approves. Greenery is often designed onto buildings that are located in areas with limited natural land resources. The greenery helps to provide city and urban dwellers some well needed plant life that can help to reduce pollution and to beautify their living spaces.
Modern HVAC systems will also be included in structures during the building process. These systems can reduce air pollution with a greater degree of effectiveness and maintain optimal air temperatures.
