Not Your Grandma’s Chapstick

If you haven’t checked out the lip balm aisle at your local Target supermarket lately, you may find yourself a bit shell-shocked. Gone are the days of weird little tubes pretending to be lipstick’s country cousin and tiny little pots that needed to be carried in your pocket so your body’s warmth would make it easier to apply. Filling the aisle and the shopping carts of almost everyone you know are brightly colored balls. Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you have probably seen these strange spheres sitting on desks, rolling around in purses and resting in cup holders of practically every car parked at your local mall.

They are called EOS lip balm, for Evolution Of Smooth and they are the brain child of Sanjiv Mehra and Jonathan Teller. Mehra comes from a background steeped in packaged-goods giving him a particular awareness of how the everyday world around him was planned and packaged to meet consumer needs. This led to the realization that no one had given a thought to lip balm in any kind of serious way in several decades. So he joined forces with Teller, who had a background in startups, and the two of them proceeded to re-invent lip care from the ground up based solely on the needs and desires of a growing generations search for glamour and chic while recognizing the importance of going organic. Like so many perfect ideas, once you see it, it’s hard to believe no one thought of it before. Suddenly lip balm had come out of hiding and the ugly duckling was a swan. No longer were women satisfied with a single waxy tube lost in the bottom of her purse. Now she is buying several brilliantly colored, undiscovered treasures and strategically depositing them into her routine. Something as dated as castor oil spontaneously rising like the fabled phoenix to become a necessity in every woman’s purse, simply because two men saw a product that progress had ignored and decided to correct that oversight. I can’t wait to see what they will bring us in the future. Stay tuned.
